The opening show of his North American tour, at Nassau Coliseum on Thursday night, clocked in at two hours and 50 minutes of uninterrupted music - not quite a Springsteen marathon, but more than enough. It was prefaced by a taped song by Salif Keita of Mali (Mr. Gabriel has championed Youssou N'Dour of neighboring Senegal) and opened with the grandiose, quasi-African call-and-response of ''Hand in Hand,'' akin to Mr. Gabriel's songs. And while Mr. Collins did sing his heartbroken ballads, he also devoted much of the concert to songs from his current album, ''. . . But Seriously'' (Atlantic), which touch on topics like homelessness and poverty. A dollar from each ticket was donated to HELP, a group that plans to build a shelter for the homeless in New York State.
